Glossary

           Śloka (shloka)—a Sanskrit verse with thirty-two syllables in four
           equal lines, or a Sanskrit verse in general.
           Soma—the moon god, also known as Candra.
           Śrāddha—offerings to the forefathers.

           Śrī, Śrīla, Śrīmad, Śrīmān, Śrīmatī—honorifi c prefixes to individual
           names.
           Śrīla Prabhupāda—an honorific and endearing title for His Divine

           Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda.
           Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam—(also known as the  Bhāgavata Purāṇa)
           an ancient history of the universe interspersed with narrations of
           different incarnations of the Supreme Lord, and the most outstanding
           of the eighteen Purāṇas.
           Śuddha-bhakta—a pure devotee.
           Śūdra—a laborer, a member of the fourth class of the Vedic social
           system.
           Śūdra-mahājana—a great soul who is respected as a devotee despite
           being a śūdra by birth.
           Śukadeva Gosvāmī—the son of Vyāsadeva and great self-realized
           sage who spoke the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam.
           Sukanyā—a celebrated chaste woman of Vedic times, who agreed to
           marry and serve an elderly and irritable sage, thus pleasing him.
           Śukla-pakṣa—the bright fortnight.
           Śukra,  Śukrācārya (Shukracharya)—the spiritual master of the
           demons and author of a nīti-śāstra by his name.
           Sura—a demigod.
           Svarga(loka)—heaven.
           Svātī—one of the twenty-seven stars, or nakṣatras.
           Śyāmānanda Prabhu—a prominent preacher in the Gauḍīya
           Vaiṣṇava  sampradāya  after the time of  Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu.
           After studying under the tutelage of the Six Gosvāmīs in Vṛndāvana,
           he returned to his native Odisha and preached with amazing success.
