who appeared in an unusual half-man, half-lion form to uphold the
boon that Lord Brahmā had given to the demon Hiraṇyakaśipu.
Lord Nṛsiṁhadeva killed Hiraṇyakaśipu for having tortured his son
Prahlāda, who was a great Vaiṣṇava.

Orissa (now Odisha)—a state on the eastern coast of India.
P
Pāṇḍavas—Yudhiṣṭhira, Bhīma, Arjuna, Nakula and Sahadeva, the
fi ve pious kṣatriya brothers who were sons of King Pāṇḍu and his two
queens, Kuntī and Mādrī.
Paṇḍita (pandit)—a traditional Vedic scholar.
Pān-wālā—a seller of betel.
Paramātmā—the “Supersoul,” an expansion of the Supreme Lord
who is localized in the heart of each embodied living being and in
every atom of the creation.
Parāśara Muni—a great sage and author of a dharma-śāstra named
after him, and the father of Vyāsadeva, the main compiler of the Vedic
literature.
Paraśurāma, Lord—an incarnation of Lord Viṣṇu who reduced the
population of haughty kṣatriyas on the earth.
Parīkṣit, King—the king of the Kuru dynasty who was enthroned
after King Yudhiṣṭhira decided to renounce his position as emperor of
the world. He was the son of Arjuna’s son Abhimanyu.
Pārtha—(lit. “son of Pṛthā [Kuntī]”) another name for Arjuna.
Pātāla(loka)—the nether regions of the universe.
Pativratā—a pious married woman whose vow is chastity to her
husband.
Piṇḍa-dāna—an offering to one’s deceased forefathers for their
benefi t.
