Glossary
Vraja(-maṇḍala)—“the area of Vraja,” the surroundings of the town
of Vṛndāvana and the city of Mathurā.
Vṛndāvana—the present town of Vrindavan (south of Delhi) and also
the surrounding area, where Lord Kṛṣṇa performed His childhood
pastimes some five thousand years ago and which is now a sprawling
place of pilgrimage.
Vṛndāvana-līlā—the pastimes of Lord Kṛṣṇa and His devotees in
Vṛndāvana at the time of His appearance in this world approximately
five thousand years ago.
Vyāsa(deva)—the literary incarnation of God who compiled and
divided the Vedic scriptures.

Xanthippe—an argumentative woman named after Socrates’s famous
wife, who was known to have been of diffi cult temper.
Y
Yadupati—“the leader of the Yadu dynasty,” a name for Lord Kṛṣṇa.
Yajamāna—the person who pays for a sacrifice and organizes its
performance.
Yajña—a Vedic sacrifice for satisfying the Supreme Lord or demigods.
Yajñapati—“the Lord of all sacrifices,” a name of Lord Viṣṇu.
Yajña-śālā—a pavilion wherein a sacrifice takes place.
Yamadūta—the servants and messengers of Yamarāja who come to
claim the sinful at death.
Yamarāja—the lord of death.
Yavana—a Sanskrit word for the Greek race and others outside of the
Vedic culture.
Yaśodā, Mother—the foster mother of Lord Kṛṣṇa in Vṛndāvana and
wife of Nanda Mahārāja.
