Glossary

           Saṁvit—the potency of omniscience, one of the three features of the
           Supreme Lord’s internal energy. See also: Hlādinī, Sandhinī.
           Sanātana-dharma—“the eternal duty of the soul,” an ancient Vedic
           concept of religion.
           Sanātana Gosvāmī—one of the Six Gosvāmīs (direct disciples of
           Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu who recorded His teachings) and the elder
           brother of Śrī Rūpa Gosvāmī.
           Sandhinī—the existence-expanding potency in both the material and
           the spiritual world, one of the three features of the Supreme Lord’s
           internal energy. See also: Hlādinī, Saṁvit.
           Sāndīpani Muni—the spiritual master of Lord Kṛṣṇa and Lord
           Balarāma, who educated Them in the sixty-four Vedic arts.
           Sandhyā-vandana—silent recitation of the Gāyatrī  mantra by
           brāhmaṇas thrice daily.
           Śaṅkarācārya (686–718)—a great South Indian philosopher who
           established the doctrine of monism, or Māyāvāda.
           Saṅkīrtana—congregational chanting of the holy names of the Lord,
           especially the mahā-mantra (q.v.).
           Saṅkīrtana devotee—a devotee who performs public chanting or

           distributes spiritual literature for the benefit of all.
           Saṅkīrtana-yajña—the sacrifice of congregationally chanting the

           holy names, greater even than ancient  Vedic sacrifices meant to

           benefit the entire world.

           Sannyāsa(-āśrama)—the stage of renunciation, the fourth āśrama of
           the Vedic social system.
           Sannyāsī—a person in the renounced order of life.
           Sanskrit—the sacred language (used in the  Vedic scriptures) that
           appeared from Lord Nārāyaṇa. It is the oldest and original language,
           from which all other languages developed.
           Śakti—(1) power, potency; (2) the consort of any of the demigods or
           of the Supreme Lord.
