Glossary
Pitās—deceased forefathers.
Pracetās—the ten saintly sons of the ancient king named Prācīnabarhi,
who were instructed by Lord Śiva how to worship and thus please
Lord Viṣṇu.
Prācīnabarhi—an ancient Vedic emperor.
Prahara—(a Vedic unit of time) three hours.
Prahlāda (Mahārāja)—the saintly son of the demonic king
Hiraṇyakaśipu.
Prajalpa—worthless talk.
Pralaya—universal devastation, annihilation of the material universe
at the end of a kalpa.
Pratiloma—a Vedic marital match that is not ideal due to the
husband’s being socially inferior to the wife.
Pravṛtti-mārga—the path of material enjoyment (in contrast to
nivṛtti-mārga, the path of detachment).
Prayāga—an ancient holy city (presently named Allahabad) at the
confluence of the Gaṅgā, Yamunā and the mystical Sarasvatī.
Pṛthu, King—an ancient Vedic king who was an incarnation of Lord
Viṣṇu.
Pūjārī—a priest who performs regular worship of Deities in a temple.
Puṇya-bhūmi—(lit. “pious land”) place of pilgrimage, or an abode
of the Lord.
Purāṇas—ancient histories that are enriched with narrations of the
pastimes of Lord Viṣṇu’s many incarnations and of the lives of His
devotees.
Purī—any of the holy cities glorified in the Purāṇas (such as
Jagannātha Purī or Vārāṇasī).
Purohita—a priest.
