          Karaṭaka [a non-believer]—a sceptical jackal, friend of Damanaka.
          Damanaka [one who subdues others]—a sly jackal.
                      Story Two: The Jackal and the Drum
          Gomāyu [one who imitates the mooing of cows]—a hungry jackal.

                       Story Three: Dantila the Merchant
          Dantila—a prosperous merchant in Vardhamānapura.
          Gorambha—a royal sweeper.

                Story Four: The Sannyāsī and His Loyal Disciple
          Devaśarmā  [one who is at peace due to God consciousness]—a
          calculating sannyāsī.
         Āṣāḍhabhūti—a wicked dacoit intent on stealing.

                     Story Seven: The rabbit and the Lion
          Bhāsuraka [terrifying]—a ferocious lion.
          Buddhimān* [intelligent]—a smart rabbit.

                      Story Eight: Firemouth and the Flea
          Mandavisarpiṇī [she who crawls slowly]—a female flea.
         Agnimukha [whose mouth is fiery]—a bloodthirsty insect with a
          painful bite.

                          Story nine: The Blue Jackal
          Caṇḍarava [a ferocious howler]—the jackal.
          Kakud-druma [the tallest tree]—the blue jackal’s invented royal
          name.

                   Story Ten: The Foolish Camel and the Lion
          Madotkaṭa [haughty]—a wounded lion.
          Suhṛt* [a well-wisher]—a jackal, a member of the lion’s retinue.
          Sumitra* [a good friend]—a crow, another member of the lion’s
          retinue.
