Sādhu-saṅga—association of like-minded saintly persons.
Sāgara—ocean.
Śamī tree—(Prosopis spicigera) a tree with a special kind of
wood traditionally used as lightning sticks to generate fire by
friction.
Saṁsāra—material entanglement in forgetfulness of the Lord.
Sanātana Gosvāmī—one of the six Gosvāmīs (direct disciples
of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu who recorded His teachings) and
the elder brother of Śrī Rūpa Gosvāmī.
Saṅkīrtana—congregational chanting of the holy names of
the Lord, especially the mahā-mantra (q.v.)
Saṅkrānti—the time when the sun passes into the next sign
of the zodiac.
Sannyāsī—a person in the renounced order of life (sannyāsa).
Sarasvatī River—a great sacred river famous in ancient India,
flowing from the Himālayas through Gujarat to Prabhāsa-
kṣetra, mentioned extensively in the Vedic scriptures. It has
subsequently dried, causing a migration of the inhabitants on
its banks.
Śarat-pūrṇimā—full moon in the month of Kārttika in
autumn.
Śāstra—sacred scriptures, the Vedic literature.
Śaśaka—a rabbit.
Śaśī—the moon (the surface of which bears resemblance to a
rabbit).
Śaśāṅka—the moon.
Seth—a wealthy merchant of a particular vaiśya caste.
Siddhi—perfection.
Siṁhāsana—an opulent throne or piedestal for the Deity.
