320                    Names of Characters in the Pañcatantra

                       Story Two: The Moon in the Lake
          Caturdanta [one with four tusks]—an elephant.
          Lambakarṇa [whose ears are large]—a rabbit.

                   Story Three: The rabbit and the Partridge
          Kapiñjala—a partridge.
          Śīghraga [a quick runner]—a rabbit.
         Tīkṣṇadaṁṣṭra [whose fangs are sharp]—a feral cat.

              Story Four: The Brāhmaṇa and the Shrewd Thieves
          Mitraśarmā—a brāhmaṇa.
          Revāchaggī*—a goat. This name was given to a goat at New
         Vrindavan by Śrīla Prabhupāda himself, who said that the animal
          was an eater of goats in its previous life.

                   Story Five: The Brāhmaṇa and the Cobra
          Hari Datta—an ambitious brāhmaṇa.
          Svarṇadātā [one who bestows gold]—a large cobra.

                   Story Six: The Cruel Hunter and the Doves
          Pakṣihā* [a killer of birds]—a wicked hunter.
          Komalā* [a gentle lady]—a female dove.
          Dharmātmā* [a pious soul]—a male dove.


            Story Seven: The Thief, the Old Merchant and His Wife
          Kāmātura [tormented by lust]—an old merchant.
          Sundarī* [a beauty]—the old merchant’s young wife.

             Story Eight: The Brāhmaṇa, the Thief and the rākṣasa

          Droṇa—a brāhmaṇa.
          Krūrakarmā* [of cruel deeds]—a thief.

                    Story nine: The Secrets of the Serpents
          Devaśakti [whose strength is God-given]—a king.
