           Maṇibhadra—a merchant in Pāṭaliputra.
           Padmanidhi [one of the nine mystical treasures]—a Jain monk in
           white robes who appeared in Maṇibhadra’s dream.
           Maṅgala* [“auspicious,” or, planet Mars]—a foolish barber.

                Story Two: The Mongoose and the Brāhmaṇa’s Wife
           Devaśarmā—a brāhmaṇa.
           Nakula*—a pet mongoose.

                           Story Three: Kuvera’s Cakra
           Dhanasiddhi [he who attains wealth]—the first lad.
           Mahāsiddhi [he who attains great wealth]—the second lad.
           Suvarṇasiddhi [he who attains gold]—the third lad.
           Cakradhara [he who holds a cakra]—the fourth lad.
           Svāmī Bhairavānanda  [content in service to Bhairava, Lord
           Śiva]—a sannyāsī.

                  Story Four: The Brāhmaṇas and the Dead Lion
           Mahābuddhi [greatly intelligent]—an actually intelligent lad.
              Story Six: Sahasrabuddhi, Śatabuddhi and Ekabuddhi
           Sahasrabuddhi [one whose intelligence expands into one thousand
           abilities]—a fish.
           Śatabuddhi  [one whose intelligence expands into a hundred
           talents]—another fish.
           Ekabuddhi  [“singleminded,” one whose intelligence is sharply
           focused]—a frog.
