Hiraṇyakaśipu—an evil demon of ancient times (whose son Prahlāda
was a devotee of Lord Viṣṇu) who was killed by Lord Nṛsiṁha, an
incarnation of Lord Viṣṇu.
Hlādinī—the pleasure-potency, one of the three features of the
Supreme Lord’s internal energy. See also: Saṁvit, Sandhinī.

Indra, Lord—the king of heaven (Svargaloka).
Īśopaniṣad—one of the principal Upaniṣads, Vedic philosophical
treatises.
J
Jaḍa-yoga—(also called “python yoga”) the austerity of not
endeavoring for survival but accepting whatever comes of its own
accord.
Jaipur—the capital of Rajasthan, one of the present-day Indian states.
Jagāi and Mādhāi—two infamous drunkards and criminals in
the town of Navadvīpa (where Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu and Śrī
Nityānanda Prabhu began the movement of public chanting of the
holy names). These two locals got into a skirmish with Nityānanda
Prabhu and even wounded Him, but when Mahāprabhu angrily
confronted them they both relented and surrendered. They became
sincere devotees, wholly remorseful about their past misdeeds.
Jagannātha Dāsa Bābājī—a great Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇava ācārya from
the eighteenth century.
Jamadagni—an ancient Vedic sage and the father of Paraśurāma, an
incarnation of Lord Viṣṇu.
Japa—the soft or silent recitation of Vedic mantras on a string of
prayer beads that resembles a rosary.
Jayadratha—the king of the Sindhu province (in present Western
India and Eastern Pakistan) and an opponent of the Pāṇḍava brothers
in the great Battle of Kurukṣetra.
