Glossary

           Devahūti—the saintly wife of Kardama Muni and mother of Kapila-
           deva, the famous incarnation of Lord Viṣṇu. Her life and the teachings
           of her son are described in Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam.
           Devotional service—the process of worshipping the Supreme
           Lord as described in sacred scriptures: dedication of one’s words,
           thoughts and actions to Him in loving submission. See also: Kṛṣṇa
           consciousness.
           Dhāma—a transcendental territory in this world that has been

           sanctified by the appearance and pastimes of the Supreme Lord in
           any of His incarnations.

           Dharma—(1) religiosity (the first of the four Vedic goals of human
           life); (2) religious duty. See also: Artha, Kāma, Mokṣa.
           Dharma-śālā—a charitable lodge for pilgrims.
           Dharma-śāstra(s)—codes (written by Manu and other Vedic sages)
           that regulate human life and also form the basis of the ancient Vedic
           judicial system.
           Dhṛtarāṣṭra, King—the blind king who ruled in Hastināpura

           (ancient Delhi)  five thousand years ago. His son Duryodhana had
           caused a colossal war between the two groups of cousins (Kurus and

           Pāṇḍavas). This conflict is the central theme of the epic Mahābhārata.
           Dhruvaloka—the polestar, given by the Supreme Lord to prince
           Dhruva as his residence.
           Diti—one of the wives of sage Kaśyapa and mother of the race of
           demons (the Daityas).
           Draupadī—the daughter of King Drupada and wife of the  fi ve
           Pāṇḍava brothers.
           Droṇa, Droṇācārya—the military instructor who taught both the
           Pāṇḍava brothers and the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra. The two groups later
           fought with each other, even involving their common teacher in the
           battle.
           Durgā—the predominating deity of material nature and consort of
           Lord Śiva.
