           Çikñä—(1) training, education, instruction; (2) the section of Sanskrit studies
                 dealing with pronunciation.

           Çikñä-guru—an instructing guru.
           Çikñäñöaka—the eight verses composed by Çré Caitanya Mahäprabhu expressing
                 the quintessence of Vaiñëava philosophy.

           Çilä—stone. See also Govardhana-çilä; Çälagräma-çilä.
           Çiñya—(feminine: çiñyä) a disciple.
           Sétä—the eternal consort of Lord Rämacandra.
           Çiva—the demigod in charge of the mode of ignorance and destruction of the
                 material manifestation, and also famous as the protector of Våndävana-
                 dhäma  and as the best of Vaiñëavas (vaiñëavänäà yathä çambhuù—
                 Çrémad-Bhägavatam 12.13.16).
           Six Gosvämés (of Våndävana)—Çré Rüpa Gosvämé, Çré Sanätana Gosvämé,
                 Çré Raghunätha Bhaööa Gosvämé, Çré Jéva Gosvämé, Çré Gopäla Bhaööa
                 Gosvämé, and Çré Raghunätha däsa Gosvämé, the principal renunciant
                 followers of Lord Caitanya who on His order resided in Våndävana and
                 wrote many important books. After Caitanya Mahäprabhu departed this
                 world, they became the leaders of the Gauòéya community. See also the

           Çloka—a Sanskrit verse, particularly one in the meter  anuñöubh,  and usually
                 from a recognized scripture or text.
           Smaraëa—remembrance, contemplation.
           Smärta—“follower of småti.” It generally refers to an adherent of smärta-väda,
                 the belief that by fastidiously following småti regulations one can enjoy
                 the results of pious activities, gradually qualify to be reborn within the
                 brähmaëa caste and be elevated to the platform of  jïäna, and finally
                 achieve  mukti. This materialistic understanding of Vedic dharma is
                 opposed to Vaiñëava dharma.
           Smärta-brähmaëas—brähmaëa adherents of smärta-väda.
           Småti—(a) Vedic texts subsequent to çruti and, unlike çruti, handed down in
                 writing; (b) one of several compilations of civil and criminal laws and
                 codes of behavior for followers of Vedic culture. See also Çästra; Çruti.

           South India—a cultural bloc distinct from North India, it basically comprises
                 the modern states Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu.
           Spiritual master—guru.

           Çraddhä—faith.
