           (Çréla) Narottama däsa Öhäkura—(c. 1550–1611) a great äcärya whose poems
                 and songs encapsulate the essence of Gauòéya Vaiñëava dharma.

           Näöya-mandira—“temple for drama and dancing.” Common in Bengali temples
                 in front of the main shrine, it is a roofed pavilion open on four sides, within
                 which people have  darçana of the deities, perform  kértana, and dance
                 in glorification of the Lord. In colloquial Bengali, the term is rendered
                 näöa-mandira.
           Navadvépa—(1) Navadvépa-maëòala or Navadvépa-dhäma; (2) the present town
                 of Navadvépa, West Bengal. See also Kuliyä.
           Navadvépa-dhäma, Navadvépa-maëòala—the sacred area conceived of as
                 comprising nine (nava) islands (dvépa), within one of which Mäyäpur is
                 situated, and within another the present town of Navadvépa.

           Navadvépa-dhäma-pracäriëé Sabhä—an organization founded in 1893 by Çréla
                 Bhaktivinoda Öhäkura and his associates. Its objectives are described in
                 vol. 1, p. 363.
           Nimäi (Paëòita)—a pre-sannyäsa name of Caitanya Mahäprabhu.
           Nine main processes of bhakti—çravaëa (hearing), kértana (chanting), smaraëa
                 (remembrance),  päda-sevana  (serving the lotus feet),  arcana  (deity
                 worship),  vandana  (praising, praying),  däsya  (self-identification as a
                 servant),  sakhya  (self-identification as a friend),  ätma-nivedana  (self-

           Nirjala-vrata—the vow to undertake total fasting, even from water.
           Nirjana-bhajana—solitary bhajana.
           Nirviçeña—“without attributes.” (Nir—without; viçeña—attributes)
           Nirviçeña-väda—the doctrine of the unspecifiedness of the Absolute Truth.
                 Often used as a synonym for Mäyäväda, which technically is but one genre
                 of nirviçeña-väda.
           Niñkiïcana—possessionless. A synonym of akiïcana.
           Nitäi—diminutive of Nityänanda. See also Nityänanda.
           Nitya—eternal.
           (Lord) Nityänanda (Prabhu)—the avatar of Lord Balaräma, Kåñëa’s expansion
                 as His own brother, who appeared as the foremost associate of Çré Caitanya
                 Mahäprabhu.
           Nitya-siddha—an eternally perfect person, one who has never forgotten Kåñëa.
           Non-malefic mercy—(Çréla Bhaktisiddhänta Sarasvaté’s translation of
                 amandodayä dayä,  culled from  Çré Caitanya-candrodaya-näöaka  8.10
