It is good to read Bhagavad-gita As It Is twice before going
on to the Srimad Bhagavatam. It is also good to read the
Srimad Bhagavatam twice all the way through before going
on to Caitanya Caritamrta. Nectar of Devotion and Krsna book
are also important books that devotees should read early in
their Krsna conscious career. The Science of Self Realization is
especially recommended for beginners, because it helps them
to easily absorb many of the points of our philosophy. It is also
good for beginners to read small books, such as Beyond Birth
and Death, Raja Vidya, etc. The Nectar of Instruction is also very
important.
Srila Prabhupada said that “My disciples will write purports
to my purports,” and this is the main thrust of my service to
Srila Prabhupada. My disciples can and should read my books
at every stage of their Krsna conscious development. Srila
Prabhupada used to say, “If you want to know me, read my
books.” The same applies to my disciples: “If you want to know
your spiritual master, read his books.”
A Beginners Guide to Krsna Consciousness is good not only
for my disciples, but for all devotees newly coming to Krsna
consciousness, to give them some practical guidance in the
execution of Krsna conscious activities. Brahmacarya in Krsna
Consciousness is obviously most recommended for single
male devotees, although many devotees in female bodies and
grhasthas have also expressed appreciation of it.
Other books that I recommend for all my disciples are as
follows.
Prabhupada Lilamrta by Satsvarupa dasa Goswami. This is not
only recommended, but is a must for all devotees.
All other biographical books about Srila Prabhupada that I
have seen to date are suitable for our devotees. This includes
