Açvattha—the holy fig tree (ficus religiosa), also known as pippal.
Ävira—a perfumed colored powder that is commonly used during
the Holi festival, when people throw this powder at one another.
Bhakti—See Devotional Service.
Bhäva—emotion, mood, attitude, feeling.
Brahmä—the demigod who is the first created living being and
the secondary creator in each material universe.
Brähmaëa—(1) a priest or intellectual, expected to be learned in
Vedic lore; (2) the first occupational division (varëa) of the Vedic
social system.
Caitanya Mahäprabhu—(1486–1534) recognized by Gauòéya
Vaiñëavas to be the Supreme Lord (Kåñëa), He manifested as His
own devotee to impart love of Himself, especially by saìkértana.
Caëòäla—an outcaste of the lowest category.
Cuyä—a thick black oil derived from the inedible fruit of the
polanga plant. Used as a scent, its smell resembles that of musk.
Dadhi-kädä—(1) a mixture of colored substances that people
throw and smear on each other in a frolicsome sport that is often
played at the conclusion of religious ceremonies; (2) the act of
sporting with these substances.
Darçana—(1) vision; (2) philosophy or philosophical system; (3)
audience of the Supreme Lord or His representative.
Däsa—(1) servant; (2) a surname given to a devotee at initiation,
thus denoting him as a servant of Kåñëa; (3) family name in Bengal
and Odisha.
