Glosssary


           Abhijit-muhūrta—an auspicious moment at midday.

           Akbar (1542–1605)—the most influential among the Mogul
           emperors. The Mogul dynasty dominated parts of India from
           the sixteenth century until the middle of the nineteenth
           century.
           Amāvasyā—dark moon.
           Amarāvatī—the capital of Indra, the king of heaven.

           Andhatāmisra—one of the many types of hellish regions
           governed by Yamarāja.

           Arjuna—a confidential friend of Lord Kṛṣṇa and most famous
           of the five Pāṇḍava brothers, who were sons of Mahārāja
           Pāṇḍu and his two wives, Kuntī and Mādrī.

           Asat—that which is not eternal, true or spiritual. This may
           refer to matter itself or to persons who are either disinterested
           in spiritual life or who improperly practice spiritual discipline.
           Āśrama—(1) Any of the four orders of Vedic spiritual life:
           brahmacarya (celibate student life),  gṛhastha (regulated
           married life),  vānaprastha (celibate retirement),  sannyāsa
           (celibate renounced life); (2) a hermitage or a residential facility
           for renunciants.

           Atithi—an uninvited guest who deserves all hospitality.
           Avantikā—an ancient city (now known as Ujjain) in Madhya
           Pradesh.
           Avatāra—the descent of the Lord from His spiritual abode to
           the material world; an incarnation.
           Bali—the ancient king of the demons, famous for his surrender
           and charity to Lord Vāmana.
