           Vraja—a synonym of Våndävana.
           Vrajapattana—“the town of Vraja”; an area in Mäyäpur so named by Çréla
                 Sarasvaté Öhäkura for its being considered nondifferent from Våndävana,
                 and where he resided for several years prior to accepting sannyäsa. That
                 area was later incorporated within the compound of Çré Caitanya Maöha.
           Vraja-väsa—residence in Vraja.
           Vraja-väsé—(1) a resident of Vraja; (2) a designation given by Çréla Sarasvaté
                 Öhäkura to vänaprastha disciples.
           Vrajendra-nandana—a name of Kåñëa meaning “son of Nanda Mahäräja, the
                 king of Vraja.”
           Vrata—vow or observance, usually religious.
           Våndävana—(1) the uppermost transcendental abode of the Supreme Lord
                 Kåñëa; (2) the same abode descended to this planet and comprising the
                 present town and surrounding area of Vrindaban (about ninety miles
                 southeast of Delhi), wherein Kåñëa enacted childhood and adolescent
                 pastimes five thousand years ago.
           (Çréla) Våndävana däsa Öhäkura—the author of Çré Caitanya-bhägavata.
           (Çréla) Vyäsadeva—the avatar of Lord Kåñëa who compiled the Vedas, Puräëas,
                 Vedänta-sütra, and Mahäbhärata.
           Vyäsa-püjä—the ceremony conducted on the ävirbhäva-tithi of a guru to honor
                 him as a representative of Vyäsadeva. See also Ävirbhäva-tithi.
           Yajïa—a formal Vedic sacrifice.
           Yama, Yamaräja—the lord of death.
           Yantra—machine.
           Yäträ—(1) a religious festival; (2) a religious theatrical performance intended
                 for common people; (3) journey.
           Yavana—a barbarian. A yavana is similar to a mleccha yet considered even more
                 degraded. Among Bengali Hindus, yavana is a synonym for Muslim.
           Yoga-mäyä—(1) (lowercase) the spiritual “illusion” whereby out of intense love
                 an infinitesimal jéva can assume the role of a child, friend, parent, or lover
                 of the Supreme Lord; (2) (uppercase) the personification of this potency.

           Yogapéöha—the birthsite of Çré Caitanya Mahäprabhu in Mäyäpur.
           Yuga—one of a cycle of four ages in the history of the universe. See also Kali-
                 yuga.
