My Memories of Çréla Prabhupäda

In his lecture of 13 March, Çréla Prabhupäda stressed how the
material world is so contaminated that even Lord Brahmä had
to purify himself by undergoing austerities for many hundreds
of years, and even though we are very, very fallen compared to
Brahmä, Lord Caitanya is so kind that He nonetheless gives us
             a “little formula”:

                      hrenaARma hrenaARma hrenaARmaEva ke(valama, /
k(laAE naAstyaeva naAstyaeva naAstyaeva gAitarnyaTaA //
harer näma harer näma harer nämaiva kevalam
kalau nästy eva nästy eva nästy eva gatir anyathä

On Gaura-pürëimä, toward the end of his lecture Çréla
Prabhupäda said, “Don’t forget that Çré Caitanya Mahäprabhu
is the Supreme Personality of Godhead.” I became surprised,
wondering, “How could we possibly forget that Çré Caitanya
Mahäprabhu is the Supreme Personality of Godhead?” A few
minutes later, I was awakened from hepatitic drowsiness by
the devotees joining Çréla Prabhupäda in chanting çré-kåñëa-
caitanya prabhu nityänanda çré-advaita gadädhara çréväsädi-
gaura-bhakta-vånda. After that, Çréla Prabhupäda said, “This
will make your life perfect. Thank you very much,” ending the
lecture to a great roar of appreciation.

On 18 March, two days after Gaura-pürëimä, in his Bhägavatam
lecture Çréla Prabhupäda said, “Çrémad-Bhägavatam should
be your life and soul, to remain constantly in Kåñëa
consciousness.” This instruction became an important focus
in my life. I considered the meaning of “Çrémad-Bhägavatam
should be your life and soul.” And still today, when lecturing or
otherwise preaching to devotees, I often quote this instruction
and elaborate on its meaning—that we should regularly read
Çrémad-Bhägavatam, meditate on its content, memorize its
principal çlokas, discuss it among devotees, and distribute it
