every apprehension that I had, and my skepticism was replaced
with enthusiasm.
I spent the first twenty years of my life trying to fit in with
the hip, modern culture and the next twenty years living
according to Vedic culture, instead. This book is an attempt
to share what I have read and experienced in order to offer
some food for thought to other women like me, who are trying
to make sense of the contradictions around us. It is meant for
those who are following Vedic tradition and would like to
know more about their heritage. This book is for those who
are curious about ancient traditions. It is also for those who
are disparaging of them, if they are open-minded enough to
have some of their theories questioned.
Although I am specifically discussing Vedic culture, the
principles can be similarly applied to other traditional cultures
all over the world. Therefore, I hope women from diverse
backgrounds will be able to relate to this presentation of
traditional versus modern values. My intention is to remove
misconceptions that currently surround traditional culture,
by presenting the principles and explaining how they were
implemented in bygone days to create an environment for
everyone to thrive in their individual capacities.
This presentation may assist the readers to regard traditional
culture with less suspicion and scorn; it may even help women
modify their lives in such a way that they are happier and more
peaceful, however, my main motivation for inspiring women
to re-examine traditional culture is not just for them to be
materially more comfortable, but for them to be in a situation
which is most conducive for their spiritual life. I would like
them to consider a way of life that gives them the breathing
