As it happened, I did end up in an engineering college, enrolled
in one of the most coveted courses at the time — computer
science. Staying on the campus far from home, traveling with
friends on trains during vacations, managing my finances and
studies, and in general being free to do whatever I wanted —
which in large part included activities like going out to parties
or rock concerts — I decided it was good to be an independent
woman and pitied all the oppressed women in the past who
had to remain home-bound. My friends and I devoured Ayn
Rand’s books, and spent many hours discussing her philosophy.
We were pleased to be part of the generation who, like Roark,
                                                                 1
College life was an endless stream of parties and ‘excursions.’
          1. The protagonist in Ayn Rand’s novel The Fountainhead.
