Preface
Summer, 2017. We decided to spend our annual vacation in
America. One of the highlights of the trip was meeting my
extended family. It was pleasant to catch up with first cousins
whom I had met only sporadically since they had relocated
from India more than two decades ago. As we watched the
children happily playing together, we reminisced about
our own childhood — endless summer vacations, when my
family and those of my three aunts would descend on my
grandmother’s house in Delhi, and nine children aged between
five and fifteen would create complete mayhem.
Our reunion was progressing as expected, with much gossiping
about family members who were not present, and yet there was
an underlying tension that completely escaped me until my
cousin-sister launched into a long tirade. She began to question
