I don’t blame her. I know where she’s coming from. I was
there, twenty years ago.

I grew up in an era of great social change in India. The social
and economic reforms post-independence had resulted in
better facilities for education, created more jobs in the cities,
and had, inadvertently, resulted in the breakdown of the joint
family system. My parents’ generation was well-read and
aware of societal changes the world over. Global travel was
becoming more common, and people began to go abroad for
employment.
My parents were fond of books and Western music — interests that
I automatically inherited.
