knowing and making known bhakti-siddhänta, the conclusions of bhakti. As Çréla
Bhaktisiddhänta Sarasvaté pointed out, any activity devoid of bhakti-siddhänta is
antipathetic to çuddha-bhakti. It was with and by the bhakti-siddhänta intrinsic
1
to his being that he cut to pieces all apa-siddhäntas (false conclusions) and
established çuddha-bhakti-siddhänta.
Bhakti-siddhänta is also an important term in the Mädhva sampradäya,
yet from the Gauòéya perspective its deepest purport is synonymous with that
of rüpänuga—for Çré Rüpa is the rasäcärya, and to please Lord Caitanya rasa
must be in accord with the siddhänta presented by Çré Rüpa in Bhakti-rasämåta-
sindhu:
‘rasäbhäsa’ haya yadi ‘siddhänta-virodha’
sahite nä päre prabhu, mane haya krodha
Çré Caitanya Mahäprabhu would not tolerate, and would become
angry about, presentations in which transcendental mellows
overlapped in a manner contrary to the principles of bhakti-
siddhänta. (Cc 3.5.97)
His nondifference from Sarasvaté was evident in his nonstop Hari-kathä,
for the goddess Sarasvaté is also known as Väëé or Väk (both meaning “speech”
or “message”), and in her çuddha manifestation is Hari-kathä. Perpetually
manifesting on Çréla Bhaktisiddhänta Sarasvaté’s tongue, Çuddhä Sarasvaté
empowered his words with the potency and sweetness of the spiritual energy. In
an address during a Vyäsa-püjä festival, Çréla Sarasvaté Öhäkura himself indicated
his identity with Çuddhä Sarasvaté:
On gaura-çuklä-païcamé, the fifth day of the bright fortnight
of Mägha [the day of Sarasvaté-püjä], children perform
worship for the sake of gaining materialistic knowledge, aparä-
vidyä. And we [Members of the Gauòéya Maöha] offer such
worship through the hand of Vyäsa to the goddess of spiritual
knowledge (parä-vidyä) on the fifth day of the dark fortnight
of Mägha, kåñëa-çuklä-païcamé [the day of Çréla Sarasvaté
Öhäkura’s Vyäsa-püjä]. 2
To express that he is Sarasvaté manifested as the väëé of Çré Caitanya-
deva, disciples of Çréla Bhaktisiddhänta Sarasvaté would sometimes refer to him
as Gaura Sarasvaté and Caitanya Sarasvaté. That väëé—rüpa-raghunätha-väëé,
*
rüpänuga-väëé, ämnäya-väëé—is bhakti-siddhänta.
