Words explained herein may also have other meanings. The
definitions given apply specifically to usage within this book.
Absolute truth—an English rendering of brahman; (1) the
ultimate source of everything; (2) the supreme independent
reality. See also Supreme Personality of Godhead.
äcärya—a guru who has realized the import of çästra (q.v.), and,
by practice and precept, establishes Kåñëa consciousness.
ädi-Çaìkara—(686–718?) the proponent of Mäyäväda who spread
it all over India.
Anartha—“(that which is) useless or harmful”; an activity, attitude,
or tendency that is an impediment to devotional advancement
(e.g., gambling, lust).
Anyäbhiläña—any desire other than for satisfying Kåñëa.
Apa-sampradäya—a deviant sect. See also sampradäya.
Arjuna—the devotee and intimate friend of Kåñëa’s to whom
Kåñëa spoke the Bhagavad-gétä.
Bhagavän—“possessor of all opulences in full”; Supreme
Personality of Godhead.
Bhägavata—“in relation to Bhagavän”; (1) Çrémad-Bhägavatam;
(2) great devotee.
Bhakti—See Devotional Service.
Bhakti-siddhänta—the correct scriptural conclusion of the jéva’s
constitutional position as a loving servant of Kåñëa.
