Glossary
Äcärya—(1) self-realized spiritual master who by personal example teaches
the import of scripture. (2) institutional head of a sampradäya or
religious institution.
Ärati—A formal ceremony of worship, in which a deity or worshipable
person is offered various paraphernalia (e.g. a ghee lamp, incense, or
water).
Äçrama—ashram.
(Çré) Caitanya Mahäprabhu—(1486–1534) the Supreme Lord, Kåñëa, who
appeared as His own devotee to teach love of Himself, especially by
the process of congregational chanting of His holy names.
Darçana—audience of a Deity.
Dharmaçälä—hostel for pilgrims.
Deva—God, demigod, or revered person.
Gauòéya Vaiñëava—member of the Vaiñëava sampradäya originating from
Çré Caitanya Mahäprabhu.
Ghäöa—steps at the side of a river or other bathing place.
iskCon—International Society for Krishna Consciousness. Founded in
1966 in New York by His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami
Prabhupäda, it is the principal manifestation of what is popularly
known as the Hare Krishna movement.
Karatälas—hand cymbals.
Kurtä—a type of loose-fitting shirt.
Lélä—transcendental pastime.
Maìgala-ärati—early-morning ceremony of worship.
Mådaìga—a type of drum.
Prasäda, prasädam—“mercy”; food remnants or other items received as
mercy from the Supreme Lord or His topmost devotees; usually refers
to items offered to the Deity form of the Lord for His pleasure.
Püjäré—temple priest.
Puräëa—historical supplement to the Vedas. There are eighteen principal
Puräëas. See also Çrémad-Bhägavatam.
