10 A Message to the Youth of India

as mothers. But respect for women is now “outdated.”
Girls are no longer taught lajjä näré bhüñaëam, “Shyness
is the ornament of women,” but are encouraged to wear
sexually provocative clothing. Women mix freely with
men, and unmarried couples flirt in public. Men view
such cheap women simply as objects of sex enjoyment,
and hence, young women must now live in fear of
          molestation.

Like it or not, today’s youth are radically
different from countless former generations. With the
latest fashion clothes and hairstyle, they zoom around

violence on anybody who even verbally opposes them,
they forcibly impose strikes at whim, regularly terrorize
and disrupt campus life, spoil the morale and good
name of educational institutions, and generally take
pleasure in making others’ lives miserable.
Of course, only a small percentage of young people
are outright rogues and ruffians. Indeed, it is a great
credit to the youth of India that despite so many bad
influences they are not more spoiled. The vast majority
are actually fairly decent folk. For even now, the
tendency of Indians is to be religious. Their cultural
