misguided—or out-and-out materialists, greedy, or
even violent—it is at least partly because the previous
generation contributed toward spoiling their character.
Factually, many parents hardly care if their
children become degraded, even preferring them to
be modern, sinful, mean, and sharp enough for the rat
race. Such parents don’t mind what kind of job their
offspring perform as long as it brings money. They are
eager to send their sons, and even daughters, overseas
for the sake of dollars and prestige and are not bothered
if their children thereby become totally Westernized
and degraded. And increasing numbers of ungrateful
offspring reap huge salaries yet keep it for themselves,
neglecting and even insulting the very parents who
sacrificed so much for them.
But while most young people dream of excelling
in studies and going overseas, or at least getting a good
job at home, for many the reality is bitter. Every year
thousands of bright young men and women, having
worked so hard and so long for their prized certificate
of graduation, then search strenuously in hope of
finding a job—yet even if they get one, they often earn
less than persons who are hardly literate.
And yet another anxiety for young people is
uncertainty about their future marriage. Everyone
hopes for an agreeable spouse but simultaneously fears
the worst—an unfaithful or incompatible partner.
Especially, young women hope and fear more. Every girl
