About Çréla Prabhupäda

His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami
Prabhupäda appeared in this world in 1896 in Calcutta
          (now Kolkata).
In 1922, after completing college, he first met
his guru, Çréla Bhaktisiddhänta Sarasvaté Öhäkura—a
prominent religious scholar and the founder of the
          Gauòéya Maöha spiritual institution—who entreated
him to dedicate his life to broadcasting Vedic knowledge
in the English language. Çréla Prabhupäda became
his follower and, in 1933, was formally initiated as his
          disciple.

In the following years, Çréla Prabhupäda wrote a
commentary on the Bhagavad-gétä, rendered assistance
to the Gauòéya Maöha, and in 1944 started Back to
Godhead, an English fortnightly magazine. Single-
handedly, he edited it, typed the manuscripts, checked
the galley proofs, and even distributed the individual
copies. Today, Back to Godhead is being continued by
          his followers.
In 1950, Çréla Prabhupäda retired from married
life to devote more time to study, writing, and preaching.
For that purpose, he travelled to the holy city of
Våndävana, where he lived in humble circumstances in
          the historic temple of Rädhä-Dämodara.
In 1959, Çréla Prabhupäda accepted sannyäsa
(formal renunciation of family life for full dedication
